⬅️ Previous Article: The Video

Congratulations! You’ve made it to the final article, and you’re ready to submit your video game to publishers.

Here are a couple helpful links:

Check out the publisher database linked above to find pitch forms, e-mail addresses for publisher scouts, pitch guides, and more. It’s a terrific resource, and it can and should be the backbone of your publisher search party.

My submission template is a simple list of questions and requirements you should be prepared to answer and submit before you start venturing down this path. We’ve gone over most of them in previous articles. One we haven’t discussed is a website. This isn’t strictly-speaking necessary, but it is nice to have a brochure site for your game. If it’s easy, go for it. Wix and Webflow make it easy enough. If it’s not, skip it! It won’t make or break your submission.

Some submission tips:

  • Cater your submission to each publisher! Yes, it’s a lot of work. But consider how important this is. One deal could change your life. Publishers pass on 95%+ of the games they see. To be the < 5%, you need to really stand out. Tell each publisher why you want to work with them, specifically them, and show you have knowledge of their catalog and an understanding of the types of games they make.

  • Follow up once two weeks have gone by, then again after the third week. If you don’t hear a peep, you probably won’t be hearing from them.

  • Expect to hear back from less than 20% of the publishers you submit to. Yes, it’s that bad. No, it’s not personal. Publishers receive tons of submissions, and luck will drive your success just as much as skill. Don’t forget that you’ve put yourself in the best possible position. It’s vital you keep reminding yourself of the smart and hard work you’ve done. Once you press that submit button, it’s out of your hands.

In closing

You’ve reached the end of my guide! I’m so grateful that you’ve read it. It really means a lot to me to play a small part in helping someone fulfill their dreams.

I’m always interested in doing more, whether that involves reviewing your submission materials, giving production advice, providing feedback on your vertical slice, or writing additional articles on questions you have that I haven't covered in my guide. I’d love if you reached out: znfried@gmail.com.

Cheers and thank you!
